A fire was seen on Segula, cause unknown. Final mission of 6 B-24's met intense flak from the North Head and Gertrude Cove, five of the six attacking planes were damaged but all returned to their base, there were no wounds. A submarine was sighted at 7:50 PM 15 miles west of Buldir Island, it submerged as our planes approached and was not contacted again. New photos show probable additional defensive works in the valley between Massacre and Temnac Bays. MAY 5: Many hits were observed near Chichagof and Holtz Bay AA gun positions and installations when 5 B-24's and 8 P-38's, with 2 F5A photo planes, dropped 8 1/4- ton bombs and 112 - 100pound bombs in the only attack of the day. Attu radar was working on 65 and 100 mgcs., Kiska radar was working on 100 mgcs. near Attu interference was met from 53 and 61 mgcs., this believed possible wide band frequency modulation; modulated by motor driven condensor and capable of blanking out all frequencies in large sections of the spectrum. MAY 6: AA was generally heavy against 34 planes dropping 38,600 pounds of bombs on Attu this period in four attacks. Even the weather plane drew fifteen bursts at Chichagof. Inaccurate flak stopped instantly at east arm Holtz Bay and Chichagof when the batteries were sprayed by machine guns from 400 feet. Attu fire was sometimes low or trailing. AA moderate to light, low and trailing at Kiska despite three-tenths only cloud cover during three attacks dropping 11,240 pounds of bombs. No new shipping or planes reported at Attu or Kiska. Six barges, in pairs, were seen moving across the Kiska harbor while much larger barge moored off the Sub Base. Six barges were seen near the west arm of Holtz Bay. No craters were seen in Kiska runway. Much oil covered the water near ship "B" at Kiska. Hits were observed near emplacements on Gertrude Cove, 6 good hits near Kiska radar, hits near Motor Pool and runway. One hit demolished a building on the North Head. In a bomb run from Chichagof to Holtz Bay hits were seen on AA battery on west arm, Holtz Bay, Attu. Strafing planes set fire to an enemy plane at Chichagof Harbor, flames were seen leaping to 50 feet. Three missions over Kiska totaling 10 mediums, 6 heavies, and 8 fighters dropped a total of 41,800 pounds of bombs with good hits seen on beach area where many fires were started, also hit was the radar area, Sub Base and flak battery on southeast of the runway. Very heavy flak forced the planes attacking North head to veer away without dropping their bombs there. MAY 7: Solid overcast was reported on both Attu and Kiska. Despite the weather conditions many hits were seen; hits near Kiska radar, one direct hit on Gertrude Cove bun position and others, when 20 - 1/4-ton bombs were dropped in three raids. Sixteen additional 500 pound bombs were dumped on Little Kiska when main Jap base was locked in, five hits seen in camp areas. Four Attu bombing missions dropping 31 - 1000 pound bombs on Chichagof and Holtz Bay scored god hits in camp areas and on gun batteries. Grass fires were started by Rat Island strafing, observers reported cabins or shelters possibly used by the enemy. a hut, tripod, mast and well hidden sod house were found at Gunners Cove, Rat Island. Kiska missions were opposed by moderate to very low accurate AA with tracers noted at 4000 feet. One fighter sustained battle damage, large hole in the left wing. Attu AA usually heavy and accurate, but light and inaccurate fire came from AA guns while planes strafed gun areas. Fairly heavy AA came from area 11,000 yards west of Gertrude Cove, Kiska. No new enemy shipping or planes sighted. [signed] THEODORE B. TUFTE, Captain, C.A.C., Intelligence Officer. DISTRIBUTION: ------------ "A" R E S T R I C T E D - - - - - - - - - -
